George Pennier

George Pennier, a Coast Salish artist of the Sto:lo Tribe, was born in Mission City, British Columbia, Canada on March 20, 1957. Raised in a family of nine children near Harrison Lake, George attended school in the Fraser Valley. However, his education in art was essentially self-taught; George explains he was simply "always drawing". It was in 1979 that George met Willis Peters of Chilliwack, who encouraged the twenty-two year old amateur to seriously attempt working in the traditional Northwest Coast designs. George's subsequent move to Victoria led him to meet and become a student of prominent Northwest Coast artists Floyd Joseph and Tony Hunt. He is presently working in original paintings (acrylics on canvas) as well as wood carving. Recently, George began teaching a workshop teaching Northwest Coast Native art design.
